Are The Beetles making a come back in Kansas?

Carly is into names and relationships. She wants to know what everyone's name is and how they are related - example: "What is Maggie's middle name? Is she my big sister or my little sister?"

Well...Maggie is the dog, she is registered so her middle name is Mae "Her middle name is "Mae". Maggie is older than her but she is bigger than Maggie. "Maggie is your big sister"

"I like her being my sister, she has blonde hair like me."

The minds of children!

The other day Carly and I went on an adventure to check baby calves with my step dad - Mark. She wanted to know the baby calf's name. Mark told her it was "George". She was happy with that and on occasion asks to go see "George". We will probably have to have a  heifer or cow named George until she is old enough to understand that baby calf George will be sent to sale in a few months.

Monday we went to check calves again - there was a brand new one and Mark gave it an "ear ring" which is just a numbered tag and you write down in a book which cow the calf belongs to for record keeping purposes.

After giving the calf the "ear ring" Carly asked Mark what the calf's name was. He said "George" she said "no, there is already a George" so Mark smiled and said "How about Paul"

My daughter thought that was a great name and waved bye-bye to Paul.

If the next calf is named John or Ringo I will no be surprised.

Supper is ready!

We have an awesome daycare provider. Bonnie lets the kids help in the garden, she does crafts, works with them on letters, colors, shapes, manners, shoe tying, sharing. All this from a homebased daycare - we are blessed.

We are also blessed that Bonnie teaches the kids things like properly washing hands after pottying, sneezing into the elbow instead of all over the person next to you, using a fork and spoon for the appropriate foods and sit in a chair. We do it at home but reinforcing it at daycare is such a help.

Bonnie also does fire drills. In Kansas this is required and you have to keep track of them, just like we do at the school I teach at. So when Cody opened the oven door and the heat set the kitchen smoke detector off Carly knew what to do.

She promptly said "We need to go outside. At Bonnies you go outside by the tree when it goes BEEP BEEP."

My husband responded "Well, at home when it goes BEEP BEEP, supper is ready."

That's what he said...

My daughter is being a real whiner here lately. She is 2 1/2 so it is to be expected but it is really getting on my nerves.

The other day (no wait, EVERY DAY) wants a drink so she says "I neeeeedddd sommmmm juuuuuiiiiicccceeee" with her face all scrunched up and a pleading look in her eyes.

I sigh first then respond "We need to say it nicely."

Blank stare with scrunchy face from the kid.

"Say, I would like some juice please" with an upbeat sound and a plesant smile.

In a tone that I will call imitation...instead of mockery "I would like some juiiiiicccceeeee peas"

Insert internal sigh and a bright smile on the outside with more upbeat sounds and words of praise we skip off to the refrigerator to get some juuuuuuiiiiiicccccceeee.

5 minutes later the kid comes crying to me. I have no idea what she is saying it sounds like this "alkakfhnf **sob** (wipe a tear) lskjfifonn slfnfn aldkjaoinf and kandionelajndfk andka **sob**" (throw head in my lap and sob again)

"Carly, I do not understand what you are saying. Stop crying and whining and just talk to me."

" I....**sob** ...need alkdnakjnakj aknakjnas and I want some alknafnka ajnanff cause it is." (more on the "cause it is" bit later)

"Carly, you have to ask for what you want, I can't understand you when you cry like that. Just ask me for what you need and I will do my best to get it."

Insert a flouresent object with a pull chain above my head and in your best Gru voice (from Despicable Me) say "Lightbulb" as you pull the chain.

 This picture came from.....here >   https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/p480x480/301605_10151315760852592_481221594_n.jpg

I have never been one of those people who say "God told me to!"

Maybe God is giving me the silent treatment or maybe I can't hear him (I have a hearing deficiency on the left side...maybe he is whispering on my left side!!! OH NO!!)

I do believe in the JFV (Jesus' Funniest Video's) if you would like more information on these please see my friend Sharita's blog. She has a great explaination.

So...back to the kid and the whining. When I told her that she needed to stop and just tell me what she wanted I had a lightbulb and JFV moment.

In my head I imagine God looking a Peter and chuckling saying "See what I did there...."

You see, I had a thought. That is exactly what I need to do. Stop whining and crying and stomping around about something and just tell God what is going on. He will do his best, He knows my heart and what is best for me. He sees the big picture that I can't see, but sometimes we just have to say it in a plain voice instead of assuming He knows what we want and will make it happen.

I really hope I haven't caused Him to grit his teeth and say in an upbeat voice "Use your grown up words and grown up voice, I don't know what you want unless you ask for it."

Side bar: In movies God's voice is often Morgan Freeman's voice. I always think of it as Patrick Warburton's voice - he is the voice of Kronk from The Emperor's New Groove, The Wolf in Hoodwinked and a bazillion other characters.

Glad it wasn't me!

You know those moments when you are like...Geeezzzz I am glad that didn't happen to me.

I have one of those for you....not for me, because it happened to me.
This is the snow hanging off our front porch roof.

Her in the midwest it snows frequently in the winter - crazy, right?? Just this past week, it snowed A LOT - like no school a lot - which has to be more than a few inches right?

Maggie standing in a truck tire path.
RIGHT!!

Try 8-10, depending on which farmer you ask ...it is always the same with those farmers - always trying to out do one another!

Annnnyyyways - so my sister comes home from college and decided to come to my house - only she misses her corner, not so bad but the road grater has only done one lane down the gravel road so she has to go clear around ( 4 miles out of her way) and gets stuck, did I mention she also shredded a tire on some pretty wicked ice?

So Carly and I load up - and we get in a friend's vehicle because Cody is at work and his truck is in the body shop because a different friend had a minor brain fart and backed into it. WHOOPS! So a friend of ours lent us me his 4 wheel drive truck very similar to Cody's, just in case I needed to go somewhere.

Which I did...my sister was stuck....... remember?

So I get to her, we get her lug nuts off (this is not a crude joke, these are technical terms, look em up!!) and the jack under the door of her car and my step dad gets there to help.We are laughing and joking and I hear a "clicka"...then another "clicka" and I go to our friend's vehicle...

and Carly...

fervently pressing the lock button with a very broad smile on her face as she proudly says "Mama, I do it" ......

my brain stops, my heart stops and then my brain goes a thousand miles a second

She locked herself in, maybe I can get her to push the other buttons...at least the truck isn't on, she can't get too hot, oh no, the truck isn't on, she will get too cold, my phone is in there, Caitlin's phone is dead, Mark doesn't get good reception, our friend may not answer, Carly thinks this is fun, Cody is going to be so mad at me, where is the crow bar!!

I end up coaxing her to push the lock/unlock buttons again but she only pushes the lock. She can't get the window to go down and now sees the panic on my face. I very sternly but rationally tell my sister to get a way to call our friend with the truck, if they call more than twice and can't get a hold of anyone I am breaking the truck window.

Long story short (heee heee heee) our friend is there, comes with the spare key and Carly is locked in all of 15 minutes. She of course is jamming to music and I am hollering things like, "Where is the moon?" "What color are your pants?" through the window to try and keep her entertained.

The second our friend comes around the corner and the doors unlock I wretch it open and grab for Carly and immediately begin to sob.

Not my usual tears - which fall often. No, those are civilized tears that slide down my face out of my control.

This is uncontrollable vocalization and gasping with tears pouring down my face, stinging my cheeks with their warmth and making a very damp spot on Carly's head. Carly then begins to cry and push me away saying "Ouchie Mama, too tight, squish me Mama" I don't care. I am just holding her because you don't let yourself think what if until after.

See, aren't you glad it wasn't you??

Birthday time!!

Carly's birthday was a great time. As usual we had it at the community building here in town because our house can not fit everyone in it and I refuse to have 40 b-day parties for her. Our divorced/remarried families can just suck it up and come to one party.

Since Daddy was really sick last year, he got all the fun of helping to open the presents! I think he really enjoyed it. Carly did.

The balloons are from my dad and Kim. Instead of packing peanuts they packed the tricycle in about 200 balloons. Wow guys, thanks.

Carly's shirt says "Happy Birthday To Me". The hilight of the party was when Carly pulled a card out and took it out of the envelope. She opened it and Cody said "What does it say" without missing a beat Carly said "Happy Birthday to You!" the promptly pitched it to the side and dug into the paper!

This was from Mom and Daddy - we got her a "Meowsic" piano. Shaped like a cat - it is a little freaky looking but Carly is super into it.

Last but not least - CAKE! yes those are shot gun shells and feathers - I washed them all, no worries!

How to be a Princess

Find this exact shirt at www.shirtofun.com
Back in "the day" I was into the princess thing- not Disney style princess, more like Claire's and cheap accessory store princess. I had a blue shirt with a glittery Princess! and a pink shirt with Princess: noun, see: ME, and....you get it right?

I was not overly conceited, I just liked princess stuff. No one ever called me princess, or treated me like a princess, in fact I despised dresses and often wore jeans and tennis shoes to school....and every where else.

Then I went to college, had a great time and forgot all about the princess phase.

Fast forward 8 years to this morning - 6:45 am, hair is wet and not brushed, make-up is half on, under eye bags are super baggy as I wrote 1 paper and re-read/edited another for masters classes last night, shirt untucked, pink skirt is wrinkled from being left in the dryer over night, no deodorant, teeth not brushed.

Carly comes careening into the bathroom giggling, hair wild, one shoe on the other in her hand, and stops to look at me.

We make eye contact and I lead her to the living room, set her on my lap to put her other shoe on. She pats my disheveled skirt and says "Mama pretty, Mama princess" and smiles at me then slips off my lap before I can give her a hug.

Way better than any t-shirt.

Reference Point

Some of my friends who have not seen Carly lately have been asking "How big is she now?" Well friends, she's about as tall as my mom's toilet. How's that for a reference point?? HAHA!!

She also thinks she has to have a coat or jacket on at all times. I should feel lucky that she likes to put it on but mostly it's just irritating when she gets to hot or when she wants to wear someone's jacket besides her own, like she his here. I have let her run around in just a diaper and a jacket before.

Meet Santa

Carly is a lot like me when it comes to strangers - she doesn't know one.

Don't get me wrong, "stranger anxiety" is full blown - for about 5 seconds - then she's over it and happy as can be.

Last week we got to meet Santa, it was less than stellar but no tears were shed so that is pretty good by me.

Also, we let  Maggie in for a little while, she and Carly played nicely. First they shared some breakfast.

Then Carly decided Maggie was a jungle gym.

Then Maggie decided Carly should rub her tummy. ***No babies were injured in the making of these memories***

Now to prepare for the birthday party. Joy - I hope!

Baby T's been a sick-o

Carly was really sick the beginning of November. It stared the 4th.

Aundi had her at school doing some PTO stuff and said she was running a fever in the afternoon but it was low. A bunch of students were gone and I had 2 hours at the end of the day with nothing so I was going to take her to my room to play while I graded papers.  Mr. Principal saw me coming down the hall with her. He said "Hi" to her and brushed her hair out of her face. Her fever must have gone up because even he noticed. HE SENT ME HOME. I am blessed to have an administrator that cares.

Saturday Carly had a runny nose and a low fever - snot was clear and fever remained low so I figured it was just her teeth.

Sunday we went to my grandma's for Dad and Kim's birthday lunch and Carly started to  get really snotty and cough a little but her fever was still low  like 99 low. I ended up not feeling well and my sister took Carly to my mom's.

I stayed home from school sick Monday. My mother did not tell me Carly ran a fever all day because seh wanted me to rest - thanks Mommy!

Tuesday I went to school but mom called and I left to take Carly to the Dr because her fever spiked to 103.4
Dr. gave her meds which gave her a horrid diaper rash and told me to keep alternating Tylenol and Ibuprofen because she was feverish, getting 2 teeth and had a mild ear infection.

Wednesday and Thursday I layed around with a sleepy baby. Wednesday she was only awake for 6 hours the whole day- it really worried me. We went each day so the Dr. could listen to her lungs because he was worried about it turning to pneumonia or RSV. I was so worried about it being RSV again.

Friday I went to work and Cody kept her. I have an amazing hubby.

Saturday and Sunday Carly wanted to be held a lot but her fever broke Saturday night thankfully.

However- since she had been held or slept with us so much it was a total pain to get her back in her own bed....*sigh* I do love my wiggle baby though.

Carly Jolene Has Arrived!

At 2:40pm on December 22 our baby girl made her arrival. It was a pretty drama free labor and delivery.

4:30AM Up, Cody made biscuits and gravy while I showered and showed Maggie some mega love before putting her in her pen.

6:00AM Arrived at to check in for induction.

7:00AM Hooked up and Pitocin started. 2cm dialated, no contractions.

9:30AM At 4cm, contractions registering at 70's and 80's 2-3 minutes apart. Dr didn't want to slow Pitocin down and suggested I might be going fast and to get Epidural now.

10:30AM Epidural done and Dr broke water.

Epidural experiance: Anestesiologist (sp?) was checking on another lady next door so the nurses told him about me and he went and got his stuff then came right in! Told us all the things that could happen (may not work, may work on one side only, can cause a spinal headache if..etc) then he began. I bent forward and dropped my shoulders and put my chin to chest, he put a finger between 2 vertebrae low in my back and told me to arch my back against it, then gave a small shot to numb the spot for the cathater to go in. Told me to take a deep breath and then small ones and focus on breathing not the pressure on my back. I was squeezing Cody's hand so hard he was cringing but I couldn't see because my head was down...then the doctor said "Oh Shit" and I almost jerked...the catheter wasn't going in right and he just had to start it again. Not a big deal but I thought it was and got really tense which he sensed and told me what was going on. He then taped the catheter up my back and over my shoulder then hooked up the drip. In about 5 minutes my legs felt tingly and heavy.

11:00AM Put in Foley catheter. Legs were very heavy but could still move ankles and slide legs back and forth. Still at 4cm but baby bump was visibly lower and I was only feeling pressure at the top of uterus an not real contractions which were 1-2 minutes apart.

11:30AM Feeling great, getting sleepy. Told Cody if he wanted to eat lunch he should do it now. Connie brought him lunch.

12:30PM Cat napping. Left leg still tingly and heavy. Right leg completely dead. Feeling same pressure as before.

2:00PM Have been feeling an achiness in left hip, left leg is less numb, right leg still dead and pressure only with really hard contractions. 7cm dilated.

From here on out the time line gets a little sketchy. I was talking to Cody and felt a contraction so I looked at the monitor and the nurse (Debra) was looking at it too...her heart rate dropped to 90's after contraction it should have gone back up to 140's but it didn't. She called for another nurse (Andette), Debra watched monitor while Andette and Cody rolled me to my left side...no change, rolled me to right side...no change. Debra calls Dr and says "Can you come down I have details" I begin to think that something is wrong. While waiting all of 1 minute for the doctor Andette and Cody are still moving me around and putting the bed up and down to try to get her heart rate to change and Debra is wheeling stuff into the room, everyone looks serious.

Dr comes in and checks me and says I'm ready to push (WHAT!! LIKE 10 MINUTES AGO I WAS AT 7CM!!) The nurses take the bottom off of the bad and lift the stirrups. Dr tells me to push down like I need to poop as he is getting the gown on. Pushed through 4 more contractions and her head was out. Cleaned her mouth and nose, one more push and her body was out, Cody cut the cord, they put her on my chest and rubbed her hard and she cried. Then I cried.

Took her over to warmer to clean her off and check Apgar Scale while placenta was delivered and Cody ran out to waiting room to tell his mom and my mom she was already here.

Ta da!

Doesn't he make pretty babies!

Welcome to my world. Nothing too exciting going on here....I am a teacher and enjoy telling my friends about the interesting things that happen in my daily life. I find the most pleasure in the simple things that occur daily. Like the brilliant sunsets as I drive home from work or the way Maggie whimpers and paws when she dreams in the kitchen or the way Cody starts my car when he leaves for work just because he knows I don't like to be cold.
